Saturday Social Club Launches at Rivermead
A NEW social club has launched at Rivermead, offering a fun social outlet for people who find it hard to leave home without support, whilst also giving their carers an opportunity to get some much need time to themselves.
The club is run by Age UK Reading, in partnership with Reading Council. It offers 3 hours of activities, games, socialising and afternoon tea on the first Saturday of the month from 12 to 3pm.
Activities on offer vary from bingo, group singing, games, quizzes and reminiscence sessions.
At the first club day on Saturday 7th January, attendees enjoyed a warm welcome in a relaxed environment, a light lunch and a game of Boccia. The club was well received by a number of residents and carers who came along to see what the service was about.
The venue allows for an easy drop of at the disabled parking bays at the front door. Age UK Reading also work closely with ReadiBus and can help organise membership with transport from a person’s doorstep straight to the club.
The club is currently trialling for a 3 month period to gauge demand for the service.
Cllr Rachel Eden, Reading’s Lead Member for Adult Social Care, said: “This new Saturday club offers frail and elderly people a great chance to socialise in a friendly, supportive environment.
“Carers do such an important job and it is crucial they get enough breaks to help maintain their wellbeing. This club offers the opportunity for them to take much needed respite, safe in the knowledge their loved ones are supported by professionals.
“We are committed helping vulnerable residents to live fulfilling lives and I hope more people will join the Saturday club and take advantage of everything it has to offer.”
