National healthcare and bereavement charity, Sue Ryder, is encouraging Berkshire residents to make a splash by signing up to their newest event – Lap the Lake.

The exciting new open-water swimming event will be held on Saturday 10 May, inviting swimmers to join in on a day of fun and fitness while raising vital funds for Sue Ryder, which runs Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading.

The event will be taking place ahead of International Nurses Day on 12 May and hopes to raise funds so that Sue Ryder nurses can continue providing expert care to those who need it.

Lap the Lake will take place at Hi5Ski School, Reading, RG30 3UN, offering a picturesque setting for participants to swim either 500m, 750m, or 1km in the beautiful Reading Lake. Whether you’re an avid swimmer or looking for a new challenge, this event promises something for everyone.

Ashni Parmar, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder, said: “We are incredibly excited to introduce Lap the Lake to both new and existing supporters. This event is not only a fantastic way to enjoy the natural beauty of our surroundings, but it also provides an opportunity for individuals to come together in support of our cause. Every stroke, lap, and fundraising effort will help us continue providing essential care and support to those who need it most.”

Among the participants is Anna Hassall, Healthcare Volunteer Coordinator at Sue Ryder. When asked what inspired her to join the event, Anna said: “I am always looking for ways to support the incredible work Sue Ryder does. I am a keen swimmer, so this event is right up my street – although usually I am in a lovely warm pool!”

To prepare for the cold-water swim, Anna shared: “Currently, I am swimming three times a week in the pool. I have never done any open water swimming, but I am keen to give it a go, it is great to have a new challenge.

“I know on the day I’ll be motivated to keep going with the thought of a hot chocolate and my children being proud of me when I get out, as well as knowing I am raising vital funds for Sue Ryder, meaning we can continue to support more people facing death and grief.”

For teams of five or more, there will be a 15% discount off the registration fee. In addition, the top fundraiser will receive a special item from Dryrobe as a thank you for their efforts. The event is open to those aged 18 and above and is perfect for both new and seasoned open-water swimmers.
