Depression Xpression is a peer support group founded in 2014 for people with depression and other mental health issues. It runs monthly evening meetings in Reading and Wokingham and a drop-in coffee morning every Friday in Reading. There are also regular evening Zoom support groups for those unable to attend in-person meetings.

Naomi Withey, chair of the group, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players, this grant means that we can continue to build a community of support for local people with mental health issues. We’ll be engaging with a variety of speakers on topics such as mindfulness, nutrition, sleep, yoga, medication, art and nature. We’ll also be able to provide free refreshments at our meetings and free drinks at our coffee mornings for anyone in financial need.”

The group has received many positive comments over the last year, with average scores of 9/10 on its online feedback form. One user said, “Last night’s meeting was one of the best I have been to. It was a good combination of activity and being able to talk to people. I think everyone that went really enjoyed themselves.”

Meetings are completely free of charge and everyone is welcome. Activities include speakers, workshops and Ted talks on subjects surrounding depression and anxiety. There is also space to chat over free refreshments and meet new friends. The group aims to provide a safe and confidential environment where everyone is listened to and treated with respect.
