Andante Live presents Blowin’ in the Wind
14th June 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
Blowin’ In The Wind
Celebrate the music of Dylan, Lennon, Baez and Paul Simon at Progress Theatre, Reading
Birmingham-based duo Andante bring their Blowin’ In The Wind – Music of Peace, Protest and Love show to Progress Theatre in Reading on Friday 14th June at 7.30pm.
Featuring interpretations of songs by artists including Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Joan Baez and Paul Simon, the 100-minute performance provides Andante with the chance to play some of their favourite songs to local audiences after undertaking around seventy Blowin’ In The Wind shows throughout the UK since 2016.
“We grew up with these artists and their songs,” says vocalist Vee Sweeney, who also plays recorders, the concertina and bodhran, “and they are as relevant and poignant today as when they were written.” Multi-instrumentalist Mark Rowson adds: We’re not a tribute act, we don’t dress up or try to sing in the style of the artists we’re covering, but what we try to present are unique, but accessible and respectful arrangements of the music, sometimes taking it in directions that the audience might not necessarily expect.” Thus Lennon’s Give Peace A Chance gets a funk workout featuring slap-bass, Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi utilises a xylophone and Paul Simon’s classic Sound of Silence is played on a musical saw, a devilishly tough instrument to master but one which Mark Rowson has become rather accomplished on. In fact, between them, Sweeney and Rowson play at least 16 different instruments.
Formed in 2000 (although the couple have been playing together since 1987) in recent years Andante were Ken Dodd’s regular musical support act, prior to his death in March 2018. But for their upcoming shows the duo will be transporting audiences back in time with songs including All You Need Is Love, Tambourine Man, Imagine, and The Night They Drove Ol’ Dixie Down. It should be an occasion both to reminisce and be uplifted.
